Unfailing Love

Today, our focus is on the love of God. Scripture describes it as God’s great and unfailing love, and our anchor passage is Psalm 107. The final verse says:

Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.

At times, we may wonder whether God is truly good, whether He really cares about humanity, or even whether He loves us personally. Yet Psalm 107 paints a beautiful picture of God’s love in action. It shows us the many ways He cares for, rescues, restores, and provides for us in different circumstances.

Psalm 145:9 echoes this truth, saying, “The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.”

In this post, we will do exactly what David encourages us to do—we will reflect on the different ways God demonstrates His unfailing love toward humanity. As we consider the events described throughout Psalm 107, we will see His love, compassion, and faithfulness on display.

The Lost :  Psalms 107:2-8

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story, those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Using the slider, you can read the verses for yourself.

These verses describe people whom God redeemed from the hands of the enemy. Scripture tells us that He gathered them from every corner of the earth. They were lost, wandering through desert wastelands with nowhere to call home. Hungry, thirsty, and weary, their lives seemed to be slipping away.

Yet in the midst of their distress, they cried out to the Lord, and He delivered them. He led them along the right path so that they were no longer lost or wandering. He brought them to a place where they could settle and find rest. He satisfied their thirst and filled their hunger with good things.

The Lawful Captives : Psalms 107: 10-16

Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

The  next verses describe God’s unfailing love toward those who find themselves in bondage as a result of their own choices. These are people who have rebelled against God’s commands, rejected His plans, and are now experiencing the consequences of going their own way.

The psalm describes them as being subjected to bitter labor, stumbling through life, and finding no one to help them. When it says that God subjected them to bitter labor, it does not mean that God delights in their suffering. Rather, it speaks of God allowing them to pursue their own path and experience the consequences of rejecting His wisdom and guidance.

The Apostle Paul describes a similar reality in Romans 1:21–32. He explains that when people continually reject God and His ways, He allows them to follow their own desires, and they eventually reap the consequences of their choices.

Yet even here, we see the incredible love and mercy of God. The psalm tells us that when these people finally recognized their condition and cried out to the Lord, He saved them from their distress. He brought them out of the darkness and broke the chains that held them captive.

God’s promise is that when we turn back to Him, He is able to break down every gate of bronze and cut through every bar of iron that keeps us bound. No prison is too strong, and no chain is too heavy for Him to break.

This is another beautiful picture of God’s unfailing love. Even when we go astray through our own choices and find ourselves trapped by the consequences of our actions, God does not abandon us. When we humble ourselves, acknowledge our mistakes, and cry out to Him, He is willing to forgive, restore, and deliver us despite our earlier rejection of His ways.

The Foolish & Rebellious: Psalms 107:17-22

Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.

This section of the psalm speaks about people who have suffered because of their own foolish choices and rebellion. Through their actions, they have brought themselves to the brink of destruction, finding themselves at the very gates of death.

Yet even in such a desperate situation, God’s love remains available to them. When they cry out to Him in their distress, He responds by saving them from their troubles. He sends His word, His wisdom, and His instruction to heal them and rescue them from the path they were on.

Once again, we see God’s unfailing love on display. No matter how far we have fallen or how much of our suffering is the result of our own choices, God is willing to meet us where we are.

Those At Their Wits End: Psalms 107: 23-32

Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lordhis wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

This section speaks to those moments in life when we reach the end of our strength and our courage begins to fail. Times when the storms of life seem overwhelming, the waves rise higher and higher, and we feel helpless in the face of our circumstances.

Yet the psalm reminds us that when we turn to the Lord and cry out to Him in our trouble, He hears us. He delivers us from our distress, stills the storms that rage around us, and calms the waves that threaten to overwhelm us.

What a comfort it is to know that no storm is too great for God. When life’s challenges leave us feeling exhausted, afraid, or at our wit’s end, we can call upon Him. He is able to bring peace in the midst of chaos and guide us safely through even the most difficult seasons of life.

The Wicked Vs. The Needy: Psalms 107:33-42

He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.

In this final section, we see both God’s justice and His compassion on display.

First, the psalm describes God’s judgment on the wicked. Because of their wickedness, their rivers and springs are turned into dry ground, and their fruitful land becomes barren. Their prosperity is diminished, and they are brought low through oppression, calamity, and sorrow. The psalm paints a picture of God humbling those who persist in wickedness and rebellion. And He does that to reduce their number so that wickedness doesn’t fill the land.

At the same time, we see God’s heart for the hungry, the needy, and the afflicted. He transforms deserts into pools of water and parched ground into flowing springs. He provides a place for the needy to live, blesses the work of their hands, and causes them to flourish. Their families increase, their resources are sustained, and they are lifted out of their affliction.

What a remarkable contrast. While God opposes wickedness and brings justice where it is needed, He also shows great compassion toward those who are humble, needy, and dependent on Him. He lifts up the afflicted, provides for them, and blesses them abundantly.

Once again, we are reminded that God’s unfailing love is not separate from His justice. Rather, His justice restrains evil, while His love and compassion bring hope, restoration, and blessing to those who look to Him.

Conclusion: Psalms 107:43

When we reflect on all these scenarios in Psalm 107, we begin to see God’s unfailing love toward humanity. His love is available to everyone. The question is: will we receive it?

How often do we struggle alone when God is extending His hand toward us? How often do we reach the end of our strength before calling on Him for help? His arms remain open, full of love, mercy, and compassion. Today, be assured that God loves you and desires a relationship with you.

Ultimately, God’s love was most clearly demonstrated when He sent Jesus Christ to die for us and deliver us from the power of sin and the enemy. As John 3:16 reminds us:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus is God’s greatest expression of love toward humanity. Through Him, we are offered forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life.

My prayer is that this understanding of God’s love remains with you. And as the Apostle Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:17–19, so I pray for you: that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith; that you may be rooted and grounded in God’s love; and that you may increasingly grasp how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love truly is.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
